Commercial carpeting is manufactured to be durable, economical and to hold up well over time.  It is designed to hold up to substantial foot traffic while still looking great.  A commercial space with heavy foot traffic should select a commercial carpet, not a residential carpet, to withstand heavy traffic on a regular basis.

How long will Commercial Carpeting Last?

Commercial carpet is designed to hold up well in a busy  company environment and will last longer than residential carpet would under the same heavy use. The lifespan of a commercial carpet can be anywhere from three years to fifteen depending on a several factors, including:

  • Fibers: Commercial carpet is usually nylon because it is easy to clean and can come with stain resistance.
  • Density: The more dense the carpet, the longer it lasts.
  • Colors: Darker colors and multiple color patterns hide stains better and will look better for longer time periods.
  • Installation: Professional carpet installation is recommended so that the carpeting will hold up to the heavy traffic.

While commercial carpet  is primarily used in retail and office spaces, it can be used in any place where you want to a durable flooring .

Advantages of Commercial Carpet

  • It is affordable and lasts for a long time.
  • Designed to be more durable  so thousands of people walking on it will not harm the carpet fibers.
  • It is usually stain-resistant reducing how often is needs to be cleaned and replaced.
  • Less expensive than residential carpet because it is made from affordable fibers.
  • It comes in a wide range of colors and patterns that can fit into any office space.

Disadvantages of Commercial Carpet

  • Rough texture.
  • High quality carpet can be expensive.
  • Less comfortable to stand on than residential carpet. A thicker underlayment can reduce this issue.
  • Lower quality carpet  can have fibers that crush quickly with heavy use.

Commercial Carpet Materials

  • Nylon is often the first choice because of its durability,  appearance and stain resistance.
  • Olefin is slightly less durable and has a shorter lifespan.  Olefin is less expensive than nylon which is great if you have a smaller budget or are planning on moving in a few years.

Types of commercial carpet construction

  • Cut pile is usually the most expensive and nicest.  This style is tighter and softer and is great for higher end office spaces.
  • Loop  is the most common type. The fibers are  looped without being cut preventing fraying and providing extra durability.
  • Carpet tiles can be made from cut pile or loop fibers. Tiles come in squares that can be placed directly on the floor. Tiles can be removed and replaced easily.  You can replace damaged or worn out places instead of the entire carpet.

Commercial Carpet Tiles

August 28, 2019 at 12:57 am

Carpet tiles are a contemporary  approach to standard broadloom carpeting.  Commercial carpet tiles  provide many benefits to any area.  Carpet tiles are typically squares of carpeting that are made to lay down like regular carpeting. Some tiles attach to the floor using glue.  Carpet tiles are designed to lay down easily,  and they can be laid in patterns and blends of colors to create a unique look.

Different sized carpet tiles are available. Smaller carpet tiles create patterns with more variation, while larger tiles minimize the variation in patterns. This is where a carpet company can provide you with options and advice on what will work well for your commercial space.  They will come out to your space with samples for you to view so that you can see the colors and patterns in your office environment.

Why Commercial Carpet Tiles?

Commercial carpet tiles are built to last and can handle heavy foot traffic.  In a commercial building you can have a lot of other issues besides heavy foot traffic.  Stains and spills are going to happen.  Perhaps grease or tears to the carpet tiles as well. That is the beauty of the tiles.  If one or several are damaged or worn they can be replaced without having to tear up all of the carpet.  All you have to do is remove the damaged tiles and replace with new ones.  Commercial tiles are made with low pile fibers which are not easily damaged by traffic and are very long lasting.

Carpet tiles can be used in a variety of locations throughout any commercial setting.  They can be placed over subfloors because they are resilient to water and moisture.

The tiles backing material is breathable allowing the moisture to rise up through the fibers.  The backing material is very strong and will hold extremely well for years.

Easy to maintain and clean.  Easier installation then standard carpet.  The tiles can be trimmed to fit virtually any area.

How Is Commercial Carpet Different From  Residential?

  • Businesses experience a higher volume of foot traffic, so the flooring needs to be able to take the traffic without having to be replaced too soon. Commercial space with heavy  traffic should select a commercial carpet  to withstand the heavier foot traffic.
  • Durability and economy are the goals of commercial carpet .
  • Residential carpet is designed with comfort in mind and it typically uses a thicker padding.
  • Residential carpeting usually has bigger pile and a looser loop design.

Advantages of Commercial Carpet

  • Commercial carpet is designed to be sturdier so the material generally has a shorter pile and tight looping which provides the density needed to spring back  into its original shape.
  • Most commercial carpets are stain-resistant, which cuts down on how often they need to be cleaned.

Disadvantages of Commercial Carpet

  • Rougher texture
  • Less comfortable to stand on because less padding

Commercial Carpet Materials

  • Nylon is the most used option because it is durable, stain resistant and attractive.
  • Olefin is a little less durable but is much cheaper than nylon. For this reason it is often used in commercial spaces without a lot of foot traffic or if the tenant is moving within a few years.

Commercial Carpet Construction

There are three major types of commercial carpet construction.

  1. Cut pile is usually the most expensive and the nicest. This type of carpet is plusher  and is often used in high-end office space.
  2. Loop is the most common type used in commercial spaces. The fibers are looped not cut, which minimizes fraying and gives the carpet   Big areas with a lot of foot traffic usually use this style of carpet.
  3. Carpet tile is used in all types of commercial applications for high traffic areas. The reason for the installation of carpet tile in high traffic areas is that the tiles in these areas can be replaced with tiles from lower traffic areas and the look of the building is easier to maintain. Tiles that have been damaged can be replaced with new ones. This movement of carpet tiles helps maintain the look of the carpet and it lasts longer because of it.

carpert-img2We are experts at helping you choose the best carpet for your facility and location. We will provide you with many options based on your price points, quality of carpet and durability options.  It is important to know how much traffic the various office spaces see to get the optimal carpet or even plank flooring installed.

Commercial carpet is designed specifically for the traffic that businesses get. Commercial carpet comes in a variety of choices in style, fiber, carpet tiles and color. Carpeting can add personality to the work environment. In hotels, it can provide directional cues. In healthcare carpet can be calming. It can provide sound dampening in a cubicle setting or a computer lab.

Commercial carpet typically comes in broadloom (large roll) which is 12ft wide. It is laid onto a carpet pad that sits on your floor substrate. It is the least expensive option. The main disadvantage to this option is if you have to repair the carpet because of damage.

Carpet tiles, also called carpet squares or modular carpet, come in pre-sized squares with their own integrated backing and base. They sit directly on your substrate. Your installer will lay individual tiles one at a time, with minimal cutting, only resizing certain pieces where necessary.
Carpet tile is more versatile as you can pull up individual pieces if they get damaged. It comes in a variety of sizes such as rectangular or square so you can create custom looks. The product is stronger overall than broadloom as it has a better backing and typically lasts longer because of the denser thicker backing that makes the product more stable. It is great for highly trafficked areas. It is easier to install
in offices that have cubicles as you can work around areas more easily. Your better nylons are going to be stronger than polypropylene. The heavier ounce weight is going to be more expensive but last longer.

Commercial carpet should be easy to maintain. Most are made flat and dense so they vacuum easily and are easy to clean.

To match your carpeting to the proper end-use, you should consider:

  • Carpet construction and durability
  • Color Selection
  • Quality and performance requirements
  • Insulation and sound absorption
  • Amount of cushion
  • Cost
  • Maintenance
  • Fire ratings
