Buying a home? You may want to replace carpeting and other flooring before you move in.

April 8, 2017 at 3:48 pm

You will want to figure out what style and types of carpet and other flooring go well in the new home.  There are several things you should ask yourself before the close of your home:

  • Flooring When are you closing on the home? You will need time to order materials and have them installed before you move in.  It typically takes about 2 weeks to order the carpet if it is not in stock.  We are usually 2 weeks out on our installs so It is best to give yourself 2 to 3 weeks before we get in the home and several more days for the install of you are carpeting most of the home.
  • When can you get into the home so that measurements can be made for the carpeting and other flooring.
  • We will bring carpet samples to the house for you to see how the different types of carpet look with the paint, hardwoods, tile, and cabinets in the new home. This way we can order the carpet and you will know the costs involved.
  • Do you have children and or pets? This will affect the type of carpet you will want to have installed.
  • Coventry can typically do all the measurements in under an hour including showing the carpet samples to you in each room.
  • Most people prefer to carpet prior to moving in so they do not have to move furniture twice.
  • If you are thinking about tile or other types of flooring we suggest meeting us at our showroom to see the samples we have as our mobile showroom is just for carpeting.  We sell all other flooring as cash and carry. We do not install the other types of flooring. We have several contractors we can recommend but currently most are booked out a month or so. If there is a lot of tile it could take them over a week to do the install so you will need to factor this in if you want them to finish the job before you move in.  If you hire someone to do the other flooring they will typically pick it up for you with a truck.

Do you need new carpet or flooring installed?

March 11, 2017 at 8:34 pm

Does your home have carpet stains, rips or pet dander smells?  How about linoleum flooring?  If so you are in need of an upgrade.  Tearing out the old flooring and replacing with new carpeting or tile will make a huge difference in how your home feels when you walk inside.

Carpeting will become worn over time especially with kids and pets.  Today’s carpet has many options:

  • Stainmaster®’s PetProtect® line is the best choice of carpet for homes with pets and kids.
  • Resists pet stains. The carpet is solution dyed and made with SuperiorSD™ nylon fiber so it’s color safe.  It has built-in stain protection and it locks in the color so it resists fading.
  • STAINMASTER® TruSoft®carpet is one of the top rated soft carpets on the market today. It has a luxurious feel under your feet as you walk around your home.   TruSoft® carpet is manufactured from specially engineered nylon fibers to give it a super soft feel.
  • STAIN RESISTANT
  • TruSoft® carpet has stain resistance to food and beverage stains.
  • PROVEN PERFORMANCE
  • TruSoft® carpet is known to be very durable and easy to clean.

Carpet tile is also called carpet squares or modular carpet and is an alternative to standard carpet rolls.

  • The market share of carpet tile has grown significantly over the last couple of years. Historically it has been primarily used for commercial floor installation, but a growing number of residential carpet manufacturers have begun to market products aimed at the consumer.

Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) is the fastest growing segment in the flooring industry.

  • This is the designer’s choice for many commercial and residential applications. This unique product is the perfect combination of beauty, maintenance and durability.
  • You can now  have the look, graining, and character of real hardwood in LVT.  Today’s manufacturing processes create amazing vinyl “wood” planks and textured “stone” tiles that rival the real thing.
  • Luxury vinyl flooring systems use advanced realistic photographic technologies  to replicate real hardwoods and stones. There are four  layers fused together to produce the final product: a resilient vinyl backing, a vinyl color layer, a photographic film layer, and a urethane or aluminum oxide top layer. The protective top layer  is very important to the durability of the product.

Tile Flooring: Any realtor will tell you that tile flooring significantly increases a home’s resale value. The beauty of tile flooring lasts an extremely long time if it is properly maintained. Tile flooring is ageless especially when earth tones are used.

  • Durability:Porcelain flooring is very durable and  the tiles are difficult to crack. A quality installation can last for 10 to 20 years and even longer if well maintained.
  • Water Resistant:Glazed ceramic and porcelain tiles have a non porous layer of liquid glass that sits on top of the tiles making them impervious to water and stain penetration. They are also naturally resistant to the ravages of high humidity conditions. These properties makes them ideal for use in wet environments like bathrooms and kitchens.
  • Tiles that are not glazed will need to be sealed in order to protect their surface from liquids.

Valentine’s Day Wine stains on your carpet or floor:

Carpet stains
Commercial Wool Carpet at the Brown Palace Hotel

Enjoying a romantic night at home and your wine glass tips  over on the floor or carpet? Don’t worry just clean it up quickly. As soon as you spill some red wine on your carpet get a clean rag and put it over the spill and apply pressure to blot up the wine.   Keep blotting the wine up with new towels until you cannot absorb any more wine.   Then get a damp cloth, with cold water so the stain does not set in, and blot until no more is visible on the towel.

If you spilled on your hardwood floors it will be even easier.  Just blot up the wine until no more is left and then clean with a hardwood floor cleaner..

If the carpet spill just happened, get a clean white cloth and put pressure on the stain until the cloth is saturated with the wine. Repeat with clean cloths until no more wine is being absorbed. Switch to a clean, damp cloth (use cold water to avoid setting the stain) and blot until the remaining wine is no longer visible.

Here are the basic steps to take whenever Wine is spilled on your floor:

Soak up and blot spill.

Apply tested cleaning solution.

Leave solution on 5 minutes or more.

Rinse with cold water; cover with white paper towel.

CLEANING SOLUTIONS

Detergent Solution
Mix 1/4 teaspoon mild liquid dish soap with one cup warm water.

Vinegar Solution
Mix 2 tablespoons white vinegar with 4 cups warm water.

Chocolate stains

Clean up the chocolate with a clean paper towel. Use a teaspoon of dye free dish soap with two cups of cold water. Put a clean towel in the solution and wash until the stain is removed. Rinse with clean water and pat dry.

Is it time to replace your carpet? Here are a few things to look for.

Mobile carpet showroom
Mobile carpet showroom

At  Coventry Flooring our goal is to make your shopping for carpet and flooring easier than ever. Our trained professionals  will visit your home and help you through every step of the process from selecting colors and fabrics from our mobile showroom, to providing the installation.   Of course you will be concerned with the price of new carpeting and what kind to get.   We will work with you to get the right kind of carpet for your budget and lifestyle.  Here are some things to look at:

Stains

  • Stains are one of the main reasons why people replace their carpet. Over time things happen. Food and drink get spilled. Dirt gets tracked in.  If you have pets than possibly pet urine.  All of these things get on the carpet and possibly into the padding. If you have had the same carpet for a long time and there are stains than it is most likely time to replace it.

Smells

  • Carpeting will absorb odors that penetrates deep into the fibers and even the padding if not cleaned and cared for properly. Proper cleaning and care is critical to keeping away odors from your carpet.  If you have pets when replacing your carpet you may want to consider a pet protect type of carpeting and padding.

Wear

  • The older your carpet is the more wear it will usually have.  If your carpet has small tears in it they can be repaired.  The older the carpeting and the more wear and tears you have than it is probably time to replace it.  If you have polyester carpeting than it will typically matt down and lose its form over time.  Nylon on the other hand tends to be tougher and stand up better to wear.  If after a deep professional cleaning it still does not look that great than it is probably time to replace it.

Replacing your carpet will need to be done eventually.  When you are ready to start looking give us a call.  We will come to your home and help you with the next decision. What kind of carpeting should I get now?

Carpet padding options

Carpet Padding information:

  • carpet padding
    carpet padding

When you are ready to have new carpet installed make sure you get the best quality carpet padding to go with it.  The padding will help your carpet last longer and work better.  Carpet padding density and thickness each help with carpet performance.

  • The main reason for carpet padding is to absorb impact that the carpet would otherwise be subjected to.
  • A firm and resilient carpet cushion forms the foundation for your carpet. The right cushion acts as a shock absorber to increase comfort and extend durability. It also helps buffer sound and provides increased insulation, making a room quieter and warmer
  • When selecting carpet padding be sure to check the carpet manufacturer’s recommendation for thickness and density. A standard guide for most residential carpet is to select upgraded padding  that is 7/16 inch thick and 8 pound density.  If your installing berber carpet choose a padding no more than 3/8 inch thick with 8 pounds density.
  • The type and thickness of padding differs based on the usage the room will receive. Rooms with light or moderate traffic can use thicker and softer padding. Heavy traffic areas require thinner, firmer cushion.
  • A typical problem is purchasing carpet padding that is too thick. If the carpet is too high from the floor then it will not hold on to the tack strip properly and will eventually pull away from the walls.

Types of Carpet Padding:

Bonded Urethane: This padding is called rebond and is the most popular type of carpet padding.. It is made from reclaimed scraps of urethane foam used in the furniture and auto manufacturing industries. These scraps are bonded together to form carpet cushion.

Flat Rubber: For the longest lasting padding use flat rubber.  The main drawback is that it is very expensive.  We typically only use this type of padding if you have Radiant heating.

Fiber Cushion: This carpet padding uses scrap fiber and is environmentally friendly.

Urethane Foam: is available in different densities and thicknesses.

Double stick pad:  This type of pad is good for commercial applications.  HOTELS…. where carts are constantly rolling up and down the hallways.  This padding helps the carpet perform longer.
Moisture barrier Carpet Padding: This padding features a breathable moisture barrier that helps keep many  spills like pet urine from soaking through the carpet and into the cushion and floors. Often concrete floors emit water vapors which can get trapped in the carpet padding and cause mold or mildew under your carpet. A breathable moisture barrier in  the padding allows  water vapors to pass through the padding and evaporate.
As you can see there is a lot to consider when choosing padding for your carpet.  At Coventry we can help you with your decision.  The bottom line is that the better the carpet padding the longer your carpet will last.
